Subsidized iPhone 4S coming soon for “priority” customers

We had exclusively reported yesterday that at least one carrier is planning to offer special deals for their high usage customers and now we have more details about the kind of deal you can expect.

At the outset, it will be a “by invitation only” offer, where the carrier will identify customers it deems eligible (having high usage and not defaulting on your bill payment would be one) for the offer. Depending on the usage, the carrier will offer real, upfront subsidy on the phone.

The subsidy will go up to 50 percent for their most preferred subscribers.

The offer will be initiated sometime in the middle of December.

From midnight, iPhone 4S up for grabs

Leading telecom operators Airtel and Aircel will launch the much-awaited iPhone 4S smartphone in the country at midnight today at prices starting from Rs 44,500.

Both the telecom operators have priced the 16-GB model at Rs 44,500, while the 32-GB and 64-GB versions will be available for Rs 50,900 and Rs 57,500, respectively.

Though pre-booking for the latest iPhone model was on from November 18, starting midnight today, the device will be up for grabs at select Airtel and Aircel stores.

The iPhone 4S's predecessors -- the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 -- are still available in the Indian market, priced at Rs 20,900 (8GB) and Rs 37,900 (8GB) respectively.

The iPhone 4S comes with a 3.5-inch, 960 x 640-pixel widescreen multi-touch retina display. It is powered by a dual-core A5 chip processor and sports the new iOS 5 operating system, which the company claims offers faster web browsing and enhanced gaming experiences.

Its 8-MP camera has a larger aperture, a custom lens, advanced hybrid infrared filter and face detection feature. Users can record videos in 1080p HD and also use the front facing VGA camera for video chatting.

Another interesting feature is the new voice-activated personal assistant, Siri. The user can ask Siri for a plethora of information by voice, such as the location of the nearest restaurant, and it will provide an answer.

Siri can also be used to make phone calls, send messages, schedule meetings and set reminders, among other things.

iPhone 4S may trip on sky-high price

The country's most expensive phone, iPhone 4S, would be launched at midnight. The handset had already seen many enquiries from eager customers, both at retail electronics stores, as well as mobile operators. However, none are raising their hopes just yet. This is because after the price of the device was announced, stores recorded negative reactions from most consumers.

“The inquiries have been as good as those for the iPhone 4 and the iPad. But we would have to wait and watch how many of these would result in sales,” said Rajan Malhotra, president (retail business strategy), Future group.

The 32 GB version of iPhone 4S costs Rs 50,900, and the 16 GB version costs Rs 44,500. The phone also has a 64 GB variant, which costs Rs 57,500.
“The prices are higher than those of laptops. Also, Nokia is launching the Lumia 800, while Blackberry, too, launched a series of phones. So, people would compare,” said Ajit Joshi, chief executive officer, Infiniti Retail. While BlackBerry's new Curve models cost Rs 20,900, the Bold model costs Rs 27,490. The Nokia Lumia is expected to be launched next month.

The iPhone would also face competition from Android handsets, which have been bestsellers, albeit at much lower price points. “The Samsung Galaxy S2 is moving very fast. A lot of people realise one can have applications similar to those of an iPhone in Androids. That is good enough from many,” said a retailer. According to Strategy Analytics data, the installed base of iOS smartphones, that is iPhone 4 and 3GS, is estimated at 700,000 units.

The new iPhone comes with a faster microprocessor, an eight megapixel camera, compared to a five megapixel camera in iPhone 4. The latest version also has a voice-recognition software called Siri, which accepts voice commands.

The target consumer for the product, many say, is the quintessential tech savvy Apple fan. iPhone 4S sold over four million units in the first weekend after its launch in the US. Globally, too, the response the response has been good, according to experts.

“The high price of the new iPhone is also due to India's currency depreciation, as well as increased prices of commodities like copper and aluminum. Prices of electronic products have gone up,” said Joshi.

Bharti Airtel, one of the operators that would sell the phone, along with Aircel, is bullish on sales. “The device has generated a lot of interest and we expect good response,” said an Airtel spokesperson.

Both Airtel and Aircel, which also sold the iPhone 4, are tweaking their earlier plans for the new version. Bharti Airtel has a special money-back plan for iPhone, which was bundled with voice minutes, text and 3G data. A subscriber can save 50 per cent on bills, thereby recovering the cost of the device over a period. Though the subscriber is not locked into their network, the operator claimed the longer a subscriber stuck to the plan, the more he would save. Aircel's data plans are combined with GPRS and Wi-Fi, which can be used at the operator's Wi-Fi hotspots.

iPhone 4S tariff plans for Aircel

Aircel has priced the 16GB variant of the iPhone 4S at Rs. 44,500, while the 32GB variant is available at Rs. 50,900. Aircel has not yet mentioned the price of the 64GB variant of the iPhone 4S. Previously, it was listed as “sold out” on the website. Aircel is offering two plans of Rs. 950 and Rs. 1,150 for the iPhone 4S enthusiasts. The telecom operator says the plans assure you recover the cost of your iPhone 4S over a period of 2 years with its fixed discount on the monthly rentals.

On the Rs. 950 plan, you get 3000 local and STD minutes, 350 local and STD SMSes and 650MB of 3G data, and 1GB Wi-Fi data. Over the period of two years, you save almost Rs. 22,320. Meanwhile, the Rs. 1150 plan (for 32GB iPhone 4S), you get 3500 local and STD minutes, 450 local and STD SMSes and 650 MB of 3G data and 1GB Wi-Fi data. With this plan you are supposed to save Rs. 25,440 in 24 months. For more details on Aircel's iPhone 4S tariff offerings

Airtel announces tariff plans for iPhone 4S that actually make sense

Airtel will offer 1500 minutes of talk-time, 600 SMSes and 3GB of data for a cost of Rs.1,000 per month to iPhone 4S users

In the past, mobile carriers who have offered the iPhone have bundled it with tariff plans that could be called highway robbery. Honestly, it was almost like they were saying, “Hey, if you can afford an iPhone, you can also afford to pay a crazy amount of money per month to use it.”

But Airtel’s new tariff plans for the iPhone 4S are absolutely spot-on and offer great value for money. Not only are they discounted, but they actually are quite customisable to your needs.

The costliest plan will set you back by Rs. 1,000 per month (discounted 50% from the initial Rs. 2,000 price) and give the user 1500 minutes of local calling, 600 SMSes and 3GB of 3G data usage. Over the course of two years, that’s a saving of Rs. 24,000 for a tariff plan that really makes a lot of sense. There are also other plans available, starting from Rs. 300 of monthly rental.

Given that you are going to be spending upwards of Rs. 44,000 to grab an iPhone 4S in India, we think it’s only fair that carriers offer such tariff plans to help you make the most of it without burning a hole in your pockets.

A few days ago, Aircel announced their tariff plans, which we think you’d have to be absolutely insane to go for. With Airtel offering such a great package, would you be buying the iPhone 4S from them instead? Let us know in the comments below.

Three upcoming iPhone 4S alternatives

Now that the ridiculous iPhone 4S prices have been made official and disappointment seems to be the common sentiment, it is time to look for alternatives to put the money you had been saving up to good use. On a personal level, I would still prefer the iPhone 4S over any of the three alternatives mentioned after the break but I just cannot justify spending Rs 44,500 for it. For a change, I would recommend people to buy a factory unlocked iPhone 4S from the US or Hong Kong (if you can find one, that is) as asking for a 33 percent premium is just not done. Anyway, hit the break my selection of three upcoming smartphones that are likely to benefit, thanks to the unjustifiable iPhone 4S prices by Airtel and Aircel.
SAMSUNG GALAXY NEXUS
Expected to be available in India sometime next month, the Galaxy Nexus will be the only smartphone to come with Android 4.0 ICS and support all the features this year. Watch out for its 4.65-inch 720p HD display, a 5.0 MP camera to which Google has added new features. The Galaxy Nexus will also get all Android OS updates for the foreseeable future, making it the smartphone to have for those who are more concerned about future software updates than just having the latest hardware. The Galaxy Nexus should be priced between Rs 35,000-40,000.
MOTOROLA RAZR
The RAZR brings sexy back to Android, which of late has been dominated by plastic droids with no class or appeal. Expected to be launched this month for Rs 33,990 (according to Flipkart, which seems to have stocks already), the RAZR is the thinnest smartphone out there at just 7.1 mm thin. As can be expected from Motorola, it sports a stainless steel chassis, a non-removable Kevlar back and even its internals are splash proof. Other specs include a qHD (960×540 pixels), 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 8.0 MP rear and 720p front cameras.
NOKIA LUMIA 800
The stars seem to be lining up for Nokia and this iPhone 4S pricing fiasco and related negative PR was exactly what the doctor must have ordered. The Lumia 800 launch is around the corner and Nokia has a pretty good looking smartphone with a relatively new but unique Windows Phone OS. The smartphone is decently specs and Nokia will slap its Music Store (unlimited song downloads for a year) and its voice-based turn-by-turn navigation app (Nokia Drive) for good measure. The Lumia 800 is expected to be priced below Rs 30,000.

Aircel’s iPhone 4S 64GB (Rs 57,500) sold out within hours

Aircel’s iPhone 4S pre-order started much later than Airtel’s yesterday. While both carriers had the same price for the iPhone 4S, it was only Aircel that offered the iPhone 4S 64GB variant for a princely Rs 57,500! However, if Aircel’s pre-order site is to be believed, the highest-end version of the iPhone 4S was sold out within hours of the pre-orders going live. We had readers pinging us within five hours, telling us about it being sold out! We do not know how many units Aircel had of the iPhone 4S 64GB but we know for a fact both carriers have very limited stocks of all the three variants, something the carriers were not really happy about. We are also yet to come across anyone who pre-ordered the 64GB variant. If you are one of them or know anyone who did, get in touch with us by leaving a comment below.
